Expertises
In this collection of necklaces called "Module", Joanne Grimonprez uses pieces of copper tubing and polyester rope to create ornamental baroque necklaces. Working with traditional methods of making fine jewellery on mass-produced items is a way for the artist to transform both techniques and materials, and thus to shake up the traditional jewellery-making process. This challenge transforms the commonplace into the precious. While working with identical, ready-to-use objects, there is an unlimited variety of forms that can be created by combining and soldering units together. The robust metal parts contrast with the softness of the rope, creating fluid shapes and flexible pieces that explore traditional motifs such as flowers and chains. The mechanical anatomy of these jewels creates a striking and unusual dialogue with the architecture of the wearer's body.
