Joanne Grimonprez

Between industry and craftsmanship, Joanne Grimonprez's work explores the contrasts in materials and their capacity to unite in portable micro-architectures. The pieces she creates from metal and rope, two complementary materials from industry, allow her a wide variety of uses and an infinite range of combinations.
born 1983, France
lives and works near Toulouse (FR)

Her pieces are spaces to inhabit, sculptures whose mechanical anatomy dialogues with the suppleness of the body that wears them. Inspired by architecture and industrial mechanisms, her work exploits constraint as a way of generating form and giving life to matter. A refined beauty is revealed in the fine junction of two tubes, the silkiness of the rope or the dark velvet of the lacquered surface.

After studying design, Joanne Grimonprez trained at the ESAD in Strasbourg (now the Haute École des Arts du Rhin) and then at the Kunstakademie in Munich, where she became involved in a real studio practice and in questioning contemporary jewellery. With a degree in applied arts, she continues and shares her ideas through teaching. Moving to Austin (TX) in the USA, she developed the technique of powder coating, which she uses in her pieces to obtain a characteristic black surface with a smooth, matt finish. Now based in the south of France, Joanne Grimonprez continues to question the status of the object that adorns and its special relationship with the body. Her work is regularly exhibited worldwide, especially in Europe and North America.
