Marc Riboud

Finding order in disorder, walking to look and keeping an eye out for surprises: Marc Riboud has been roaming the planet for over sixty years.
To mark the centenary of his birth, this retrospective book bears witness to a prolific body of work and Marc Riboud’s singular, empathetic view of the world. It presents never-before-seen images, including his very first, taken in the Alps in the 1940s, and others taken in New York in the early 1950s, right through to the almost painterly images of the 2000s.
His images are as much encounters with other peoples as they are invitations to discover the beauty of elsewhere. Along dusty or snow-covered roads, they reveal a science of framing and a quest for harmony. “I take my hat off to the geometric and sensitive Marc”, said his friend Henri Cartier-Bresson.
To illuminate this visual journey, a selection of contact sheets opens the book, offering a few keys to his approach to the subject. A text, conceived as a poem, by the journalist and writer Éric Fottorino, reveals various aspects of Marc Riboud’s life and work, complemented by an illustrated biography by Catherine Riboud Chaine and Lorène Durret.
