Modern Maharajah, a patron of the arts in the 30s
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris honours the extraordinary figure of Yeshwant Rao Holkar II, better known as the Maharajah of Indore, who gave free rein to his taste for artistic and decorative avant-gardes by creating a unique modern universe in India.
A visionary figure in the European cultural milieu of the 1920s and 1930s, he commissioned the very first modernist building in his country: the Manik Bagh Palace (1930-1933), a testimony to the effervescence of the artistic scene of the time. The exhibition highlights the world of this mythical residence evoking the exchanges between Europe and India through the singular and fascinating personality of a young prince and his wife. Among the 500 pieces presented, some have become emblematic pieces of this period signed by Louis Sognot and Charlotte Alix, Jean Puiforcat, Eileen Gray or Le Corbusier.
